Mayonnaise causes a lot of confusion both as a lactose intolerant, and seemingly to waiters and staff. Often when I ask “does this contain dairy” I get the reply back.. “It contains Mayo”. So does that matter?
So does mayonnaise contain dairy or lactose?
No. mayonnaise does not contain dairy or lactose. It doesn’t contain milk products at all. It does contain eggs. As we all know, eggs aren’t dairy but they still seem to be lumped together. HOWEVER! Some mayonnaises have cream added in for flavour. I’ve seen it on Hellman’s light mayonnaise so its worth checking if you’re not sure. Vegan mayonnaise will also be dairy free and egg free if you want to avoid both egg and dairy.
